Best Practice Recommendations: A Guide to Monogenic Obesity
Some of the key outputs for the Obelisk project are to explore novel biomarkers linked to obesity and provide educational resources for healthcare professionals. Therefore, we have produced a practical guide on monogenic obesity for healthcare professionals who support children and families where obesity is presenting, or is a concern alongside other conditions.
This guide is structured around the ‘4 Ps’ approach of the project. It supports early recognition of monogenic obesity and informed decision-making. While the genetic basis of monogenic obesity itself cannot be prevented, we can predict risk and recognise red flags, prevent complications through timely assessment and surveillance, offer precision treatments where available, and ensure participation from the medical and scientific community, families and the children themselves, each of which is vital for success.
In this guide, you will find:
- Obesity and Genetics: What’s the Link?
- What is Monogenic Obesity?
- Why it is Important to Understand Monogenic Obesity as a Healthcare Professional?
- Ethical, Legal and Social Implications (ELSI)
- Recommendations for Practice
This guide will be useful to sectors such as community healthcare, primary and secondary care workers, such as GPs, dietitians, health visitors, school nurses, weight management teams, paediatricians and allied health professionals.
This is a quick reference resource to educate and support the current evidence base and should be used in conjunction with specialist advice, national guidelines and genetics/endocrinology services where indicated.
